چکیده

The domestication of animals made available stable sources of protein and enabled the development of human civilization (Mason, 1984; Diamond, 2002). Molecular and archaeological studies indicate complex phylogeographical histories of the animals used for meat (e.g. Lau et al., 1998; Luikart et al., 2001; Troy et al., 2001; Jansen et al., 2002; Beja-Pereira et al., 2004; Larson et al., 2005; Pedrosa et al., 2005; Meadows et al., 2007; Naderi et al., 2008). Domestication relaxed selective constraints on the yak mitochondrial genome.

Wild yaks roaming in the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibetan plateau have to maintain high metabolic efficiency. However, domestic yaks do not require such high efficiency because of their limited activity. Hence, domestication may have caused the relaxation of selective constraints on the yak mitochondrial genome because mitochondrial mutations are extremely sensitive to energy-related selective pre...

Maternal Phylogeny of a Newly-Found Yak Population in China

The Jinchuan yak is a new yak population identified in Sichuan, China. This population has a special anatomical characteristic: an additional pair of ribs compared with other yak breeds. The genetic structure of this population is unknown. In the present study, we investigated the maternal phylogeny of this special yak population using the mitochondrial DNA variation. A total of 23 Jinchuan yak...

Genetic Diversity, Molecular Phylogeny, and Selection Evidence of Jinchuan Yak Revealed by Whole-Genome Resequencing

Jinchuan yak, a newly discovered yak breed, not only possesses a large proportion of multi-ribs but also exhibits many good characteristics, such as high meat production, milk yield, and reproductive performance. However, there is limited information about its overall genetic structure, relationship with yaks in other areas, and possible origins and evolutionary processes. In this study, 7,693,...

Genetic diversity of ATP8 and ATP6 genes is associated with high-altitude adaptation in yak.

ATP synthase 8 (ATP8) and ATPase synthase 6 (ATP6) play an important role in mitochondrial ATPase assembly. Mutations in either of these units could affect the ATP processing and the respiration chain in mitochondria. To find out if there were differences in gene diversity between Tibetan yaks and domestic cattle, we sequenced the ATP8 and ATP6 genes in 66 Tibetan yaks and 81 domestic cattle. W...

Genetic diversity in the Persian sturgeon, Acipenser percicus, from the south Caspian Sea based on mitochondrial DNA sequences of the control region

The Persian sturgeon, Acipenser persicus (Borodin, 1897), is an economically important species, which mainly inhabits the Caspian Sea. However, little is known about its population genetic structure. In this study, variation in nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region of wild stock Persian sturgeon was determined to assess the genetic diversity among different natura...
